In Nepal, the pristine blue and green water of Gokyo Lake is one of the most beautiful sights you will be seeing. It is the highest freshwater lake system in the world. Gokyo lake trek is a quiet route. If you want to avoid the busier trail in Everest region, this is an entirely a good choice. This trek provides the opportunity to view the panoramic view of Mt Everest, the world tallest Mountain. You will also be able to learn the rich culture of Sherpa.
We will be starting our Gokyo lake trek from Lukla. We will take the standard way to Lukla which is by flight. We will be moving towards Dudh Kosi, a river which flows from the highest peak. We will head to Monjo later on. On the way up, we will pass the Mani walls. The stone structures are a compilation of stone structures. As we moved on to Namche Bazaar, we will pass through the gates of the Sagarmatha National Park. As we continue our journey of Gokyo lake trek, we will go through a section of red birch, fir, and dwarf rhododendron forest. We will be able to view the sight of a waterfall that flows from Taweche and Cholatse. Finally, we will reach Gokyo. You will be able to have unforgettable memories in this adventurous trek.
Detail Itinerary Of Gokyo Lake Trek
Day 01: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla(2,860m) and Trek to Phakding(2,651m) – 4 hours.
On this day We take an early morning flight to Lukla(40 minutes), and we meet the rest of our team in Lukla. After loading our trekking equipment, we start trekking from there. By descending towards the Dudh Kosi River where we join the main trail to Namche Bazaar, located just above Chaunrikharka. The walking is easy. After passing through the small village of Ghat, you will reach Phakding. Overnight at Phakding.
Day 02: Trek to Namche Bazaar(3,438m) – 6 hours.
After breakfast at Phakding, we begin our walk. Our trail passes through a pine forest on the path that goes north up the Benkar valley. We cross the Dudh Koshi River and pass Chumoa and Monjo villages. We will walk crossing the majestic river on exciting suspension bridges laden with prayer flags. Finally, we reach the entrance of the Sagarmatha National Park. After entering the Sagarmatha National Park, the trail climbs steeply with breathtaking views, and we will reach Namche Bazaar (probably the biggest town in the Everest region). Overnight at Namche Bazaar.
Day 03: Acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar.(Day trip to Khumjung)(3,700m) – 5 hours.
Namche Bazaar is a great place to acclimatize. The sights around Namche are spectacular and beautiful. On this day We can hike-up to Sagarmatha National Park and enjoy the sunrise over the Himalayas including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Kongde, Thamserku, Ama Dablam, and so on. We can visit the Sherpa Culture Museum and the Everest Photo Gallery as well. Overnight stay at the Guesthouse.
Day 04: Trek to Dole(3,680m) – 6 hours.
Today, our path will move down the hill, and then we will climb via the Mon La pass before reaching Phortse Tenga. On the way, we will pass the rhododendron, and birch forest. Moving further on from Phortse, we will reach Dole. On this day, we will walk for approximately 6 hours. Overnight at Guesthouse on Dole.
Day 05: Trek to Machhermo(4,470m) – 4 hours.
Today We will hike from Dole to reach Machherma. On the way, we will see the stunning valley with rhododendron woods. Significantly, the marvellous vistas of Cho Oyu, Thamserku and Kantega will mesmerize you. Overnight at Guesthouse.
Day 06: Trek to Gokyo(4,800m) – 5 hours.
Today’s trail climbs the ridge of valley excellent view of big Mountain Cho-Oyu and Kantaga. We will also get to witness of stunning greenish-blue Gokyo Lake. Varied scenery of the Gokyo Valley will enchant us as adjacent peaks flanking Tibet, and Cho Oyu can be noted. We will trek for roughly 6 hours today. Overnight at guesthouse in Gokyo.
Day 07: Trek back to Dole(3,680m) (Morning trip to Gokyo Ri 5,357m) – 8 hours.
On this day we will hike up to Gokyo Ri(Gokyo Peak) taking around 3 hours. Gokyo peak is at an elevation of 5,357m, highest altitude we will trek during this Gokyo lake trek. We can witness the beautiful panorama view of Mt. Makalu as well as Mt. Everest etc. Then we will walk back moving downward to reach Gokyo again. Again we will further trek back down to Dole. Overnight at Guesthouse.
Day 08: Trek to Namche Bazaar(3,438m) – 6 hours.
Today we’ll walk for 5-6 hours to reach Namche. We can see admire rhododendrons and waterfalls. We also come across mountain goats, musk deer etc. From Mong, we can see a good view of Khumbila peak. On our way to Namche, the view of Tengboche, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kangtega mountains are ours to admire. Today we will stay overnight at Namche Bazaar.
Day 09: Trek to Lukla(2,860m) – 8 hours.
This is our last day of trekking(we return to Lukla from where we began the trek). We will move steeply downwards and after crosses a suspension bridge. On the way, we can see pine and rhododendron forests, as well as snow, covered peaks. As we reach Lukla, we can relax. Maybe in the evening, we can celebrate the victory of accomplishing the trek as well. Overnight at a guesthouse.
Day 10: Fly back to Kathmandu – 40 minutes.
